RSVP DEADLINE: NOON TODAY. Please include meal choice and membership status.

Tuesday, January 31, 12-2pm Hotel Rex

2011 was an historic year in publishing. We bade farewell to Borders and now watch the metamorphosis of B&N. We held our breaths through industry-wide layoffs and new Amazon-created imprints. We cheered the strong end to a tough year for many independent booksellers, as new and improved reading devices debuted in what felt like record numbers. What’s next?

At the dawn of 2012, we gather veteran members of the publishing community to discuss their focus, plans, fears and what excites them about 2012. Just as our President comes before the nation to talk about the state of the country each year, we’ll attempt something similar, with a moderated
discussion about the state of our industry.

PANELISTS:
Hut Landon is president of the Northern California Independent Booksellers Association (www.NCIBA.com)

Elise Cannon is V.P., Director of Field Sales at PGW and The Perseus Books Group

Scott James writes a weekly column about the San Francisco area published in The New York Times and The Bay Citizen. He also writes fiction under the pen name Kemble Scott, and is the author of the bestselling novels “SoMa” and ”The Sower”

MODERATOR: Bridget Kinsella is a veteran publishing industry journalist (Publishers Weekly, Shelf Awareness), and author of Visiting Life.

LUNCH OPTIONS:
Chicken Teriyaki: Teriyaki marinated chicken breast, steamed jasmine rice, teriyaki glaze (Please note: Tofu can be substituted for chicken)

Vegetarian: Mediterranean Chicken kabobs, but without the chicken, served with rice pilaf, hummus and grilled pita

All meals include bread and butter, and soda, coffee, and assorted teas. A platter of assorted desserts (lemon bars, cookie and brownies) will be placed in the middle of each table.

COST: Members $30.00, Non-Members $45.00. Cash/checks only. Sorry, we do not accept credit cards. [Join or Renew your 2012 membership at the luncheon and receive the discounted Member rate the same day!]

If you RSVP and then are unable to attend, to avoid being billed you must submit your cancellation via email three business days prior to the event.

LOCATION: Hotel Rex is located at 562 Sutter Street between Powell and Mason. The nearest BART station is POWELL. For driving directions, visit: http://www.jdvhotels.com/hotels/rex/contact

To better serve our membership, we photograph select events for archival and promotional purposes. If you plan to attend this event but don’t wish to be filmed, please state this in your RSVP.

RSVP DEADLINE: NOON TODAY, Friday, January 27. Please include meal choice and membership status. We look forward to seeing you next Tuesday, 1/31!

Sincerely,

Adrienne Biggs, President
NORTHERN CALIFORNIA BOOK PUBLICITY & MARKETING ASSOCIATION
ncbpma@ncbpma.org
http://www.NCBPMA.org

We’re hosting three–yes THREE!–wonderful November events NEXT WEEK!

Your RSVP to our Lunch Event qualifies you and one guest to attend up to TWO book-to-film sneak previews, also next week. Complete details below.

1) Wednesday, November 16, 2011, 12:00 to 2:00pm
Salon Meeting Room at Hotel Rex
562 Sutter Street, San Francisco, CA (between Powell and Mason)

Successful NON-Bookstore Events: Learn Creative “Insider” Tips from five of the Bay Area’s best programmers of alternative literary events!

Ever wonder how the popular San Francisco Jewish Community Center selects which authors to host? Maybe you’ve heard about the Unitarian Universalist events but haven’t a clue who to pitch? Perhaps you’ve attended Berkeley City Arts and Lectures but aren’t sure if your client or book fits their roster? And just what does the Mechanics Institute Library do to promote authors?

Building on our last program about bookstore events, this month we broaden the conversation to include non-traditional book event venues. Anyone who promotes authors or schedules book events in the Bay Area should attend. Plus, it’s perfect timing–Spring and Summer 2012 events are being programmed NOW!

Our five panelists include:

BARBARA LANE is Director of Arts and Ideas at the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco. She has worked at the Commonwealth Club, for television stations KPIX, KRON, and KQED as a producer and on-air, and at KGO Radio as executive producer.

After eight years as producer of Sedge Thomson’s West Coast Live, KATHI KAMEN GOLDMARK has moved on to her “next perfect gig” as Cultural Arts Director at the Palo Alto JCC, where she schedules event appearances for authors, musicians, comedians, film-makers, and playwrights.

LAURA SHEPPARD has worked as an events producer for 30+ years and produced large events such as the Earth Day Celebration and a theatrical opening for the Degas exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum, NYC. In 2000, she joined the staff of Mechanics’ Institute Library & Chess Room. The Events Department presents weekly author events and has a film series called CinemaLit.

MELISSA MYTINGER produces programs with authors for Berkeley Arts & Letters, which she founded in the wake of Cody’s Books, where she managed in-store, off-site, and corporate events for over 25 years. Berkeley Arts & Letters is now a project under The Booksmith’s umbrella; Mytinger also manages all of Booksmith’s San Francisco events.

JAY ROLLER has been Facility Reservation Manager at the Unitarian Universalist Center for the past 5 years. His goal is to let people know that there are many beautiful spaces in San Francisco that are hidden treasures. He believes that the architectural award-winning building that houses the Unitarian Universalist Center is one of those treasures.

Moderator SAMANTHA RUBENSTEIN is a Publicist for Wiley Publishing, representing all the Jossey-Bass Education, Religion and Psychology titles. Samantha also serves on The Board of Directors of The Women’s Building in San Francisco and is a published poet and freelance writer. She joined the Board of NCBPMA in 2010 and currently serves as the organization’s co-events producer.

Meal choices are:
Vegetarian Cobb SALAD – Romaine lettuce, hard-boiled egg, avocado, tomato, blue cheese, in a honey-mustard dressing or

Seared Flat iron STEAK marinated in chimichurri sauce served with smoked tomato salsa and crispy onion rings

All meals include bread and butter, and soda, coffee, and assorted teas. A platter of assorted desserts (lemon bars, cookie and brownies) will be placed in the middle of each table.

Reminder: to better serve our membership, we are now photographing select events for archival and promotional purposes. If you plan to attend this event but don’t wish to be filmed, please state this in your RSVP.

If you RSVP and then are unable to attend, to avoid being billed you must submit your cancellation via email three business days prior to the event.

COST: Members $30.00, Non-Members $45.00. Cash/checks only. Sorry, we do not accept credit cards. [Renew your membership or Join at the luncheon and

Based on the debut novel by Hunter S. Thompson, “The Rum Diary” tells the increasingly unhinged story of itinerant journalist Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp). Tiring of the noise and madness of New York and the crushing conventions of late Eisenhower-era America, Kemp travels to the pristine island of Puerto Rico to write for a local newspaper, The San Juan Star, run by downtrodden editor Lotterman (Richard Jenkins). Adopting the rum-soaked life of the island, Paul soon becomes obsessed with Chenault (Amber Heard), the wildly attractive Connecticut-born fiancée of Sanderson (Aaron Eckhart).

Sanderson, a businessman involved in shady property development deals, is one of a growing number of American entrepreneurs who are determined to convert Puerto Rico into a capitalist paradise in service of the wealthy. When Kemp is recruited by Sanderson to write favorably about his latest unsavory scheme, the journalist is presented with a choice: to use his words for the corrupt businessmen’s financial benefit, or use them to take the bastards down.

Note: For this very special event, you’re invited to submit questions for our panelists along with your RSVP

Date & Time: Wednesday, September 28, 2011, 12:00 to 2:00pm
Location: Salon Meeting Room at Hotel Rex
Address: 562 Sutter Street, San Francisco, CA (between Powell and Mason)

They say change is the only constant, and it’s certainly true in the book business. Remember the days when the only way to find out about local author events was to read the events board inside your neighborhood bookstore? Or when there was no way to experience a live book event unless you lived near the store and attended in person? Or scheduling multiple city author promotional tours for your key authors–all expenses paid plus generous perks?

But times have changed, and we have to ask: are author events still a relevant aspect of book marketing? In this month’s exciting luncheon we’ll discuss how some of the Bay Area¹s most popular independent bookstores are currently selecting, marketing and promoting author events, signings and workshops, including using video, blogs, tweets and other new promotional tools.

Publicists, marketers, agents, publishers, editors, authors and fellow independent booksellers won’t want to miss this informative, lively and interactive discussion which promises to provide you with plenty of insider tips for creating events that generate attendance, build community, and increase book sales.

PANELISTS:

BILL PETROCELLI (Book Passage) is an author, bookseller, and former attorney. He spent a few years as a Deputy Attorney General for the State of California and then as a poverty lawyer in Oakland before going into private practice. For the past thirty years or so he has been the co-owner with his wife Elaine of Book Passage, a retail bookstore in San Francisco and Corte Madera, California. Bill is the author of Low Profile: How to Avoid the Privacy Invaders (McGraw-Hill) and co-author of Sexual Harassment on the Job: What It Is and How to Stop It (Nolo Press). He is also the author of the forthcoming novel, The Thirteen. www.BookPassage.com

CHRISTIN EVANS (Booksmith) and her husband-partner Praveen Madan are not foolhardy. Although you might suspect they are after you learn what they did in 2007. They bought an independent bookstore! With Internet sales taking an increasing share of the book market, it’s been difficult enough for large chains to compete let alone a small independent bookstore in San Francisco. But armed with their MBAs and years of experience as management consultants, that’s exactly what the duo has set out to do turn the book industry on its ear! Christin started her early years in a serious progression of corporate positions at J.P. Morgan, Towers Perrin, Dell Computer and A.T. Kearney. She attended Vassar College and obtained her MBA from the University of Michigan. www.booksmith.com

In Berkeley in 2004, MARION ABBOTT and Ann Leyhe (Mrs. Dalloway’s Bookstore) decided to pool their passions, talents and resources and co-founded Mrs. Dalloway’s, which is known for its wonderful author events. Marion and Ann met the summer of 1975 at the Radcliffe Publishing Procedures Course in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Marion pursued her career in trade book publishing at Sierra Club Books in San Francisco, Little, Brown & Co. in Boston, and Alfred A. Knopf in New York before establishing herself as an independent editor and writer in Berkeley in 1984. She has since published many articles, stories, and book reviews, co-edited Fire in the Hills, and co-authored, with Sylvia Shorris, Talking Pictures, an oral history of early filmmakers. The store’s name is inspired from the first line of Virginia Woolf’s 1925 novel, Mrs. Dalloway: “Mrs. Dalloway said she would buy the flowers herself.” www.mrsdalloways.com

People now expect to absorb a great deal of information from a screened technology; whether a computer, cell phone, e-reader, iPad, or TV. People are now “watching books and reading TV”.

Google’s highly anticipated move into this space has been of particular interest to the Bay Area book publishing community. If you’re a bookseller, author, book publicist or agent still unsure what Google eBooks is, you’ll want to attend our March 30th program featuring Mark Nelson from Google, Margie Scott Tucker from Books Inc., Pete Mulvihill from Green Apple Books and Hut Landon, executive director of the Northern California Independent Book Association.
